More Tests vs. Fewer Tests

According to recent research, courses that use more frequent testing contribute more to student learning more than infrequent tests.

There are probably good reasons why we shouldn’t give a test every week, but the researchers said that a biweekly exam led to much higher scores and higher regard for the courses than those with only a couple of midterms and a final.

Has your teaching experience proven this to be true?  And if you were to try more tests for a second semester course, what adjustments would that force you to make in the course design for the semester?
