It isn’t often that the death of a Bible professor is recognized by the secular press. Maybe it’s because the world doesn’t know most of us. But Professor Moule sets quite an example for us to live up to. Read about this man who never married and never used a typewriter to write his books.
(Excerpts from the obituaries)
Aside from his scholarship, Moule will be remembered for the influence he had upon his students and the formation of many seeking ordination. As well as being a popular lecturer and supervisor, he was esteemed as a man of the most profound faith, humility and prayer. He was much sought after as a spiritual counsellor: Joachim Jeremias, an eminent German Neutestamentler colleague, said of Moule, “In him could be seen no trace of original sin.”
—
Although increasingly deaf he never missed a trick; and despite being retired for so long he was bang up to date with his reading. Daily he would say Morning and Evening Prayer with the Hebrew Bible and Greek New Testament to hand.
—
Ex-service undergraduates discovered him to be a stimulating teacher as well as a caring pastor, and within a few years he was exerting a strong influence on a number of academically able men who would in due course form a significant element in the next generation of New Testament scholars.
—
Short in stature, he carried into old age the cheerful perkiness and humanity that endeared him to a multitude of friends.
It is humbling to consider the blessings and opportunities of living a long life of service to the church, modeling a life well-lived, and the influence that can come from that. In a world full of Christian leaders who disappoint their followers, it’s refreshing to learn of one who did not.
(Psa 116:15 NNAS) Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His godly ones.
